I think it could be stored in the data_text column, with a csv or other simple format.

It would make for an easier installation, and possibly a bit faster too (less sql involved)

Hi Gaetano

The sites where I've used it have utilised the external table to provide forward and reverse lookups of the connected data and associated content objects. I find it's much easier to do when the values are stored in the DB.

The externalMultipleOptionSearch extended attribute filter replies on this.

Do you have some use cases where storing the values in the data_text format is ideal? I think it would be fine for simply storing and presenting the data but would add extra processing.

What are your thoughts on adding an option to the datatype to allow the user to choose between the two (external table/data_text) ?

Cheers
Bruce

Indeed, reverse lookups are interesting.
The obvious advantage of having the multiple choice inline is not having to setup extra tables - both can coexist, as you have proposed.

Rather than adding an option to the multiple choice for external-table-or-not, I'd do what the standard selection type does, ie. add an option to the single-external-table type to make it either single or multiple choice. But I leave the final decision up to you.

One other datatype I've been developing is a 'linked selection' datatype, which uses the options from another, existing class attribute. I think it might also be a nice addition...
